Adopt-a-Creek
We've done some interesting Adopt-a-Creek work over the last few years.
Review the details in this progress report!

Presented in cooperation with the Royal Botanical Gardens, Adopt-a-Creek may be a full day or half-day event. It is a hands-on program where community or corporate groups leave their normal routine to spend a
day sampling a creek to assess its health. Participants sample numerous parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, macroinvertabrate diversity and bacteria levels. The group then takes part in other initiatives as required. These may include a litter cleanup or invasive species removal.
Why Adopt-a-Creek?
As cities expand, creeks and streams are becoming degraded. It is important to understand the causes of degradation in order to determine necessary steps for improvement. Monitoring of creek health by volunteers is extremely important in understanding the dynamics of the local watershed. There are many many creeks in the Hamilton Harbour watershed, and there are not enough staff members from partner organizations to monitor them all, therefore the help of volunteers is needed.
You may smoke, but FISH DON'T SMOKE. During our AAC's at Coldwater Creek, a tributary of Ancaster Creek that runs adjacent to the lower parking lots at McMaster University, our volunteers and staff noted an abundance of cigarette butts in and around the creek. Thanks to a talented volunteer, we have new posters educating the McMaster community.
